The vast majority of the nominate subspecies of the beautiful Lesser Black-backed Gull, also known as the Baltic Gull (Larus fuscus fuscus), breeds in Finland and Sweden, where populations have been suffering from low breeding success for decades owing to high biocide levels. It is a long distance migrant wintering in tropical Africa, particularly in and around Lake Victoria in East Africa, where the birds accumulate the chemicals.
