Today conditions to photograph were the hardest this winter. Only -21 degrees in the morning but very hard wind. In the end of the day there was only Ural Owl, one other photographer and me. Ural Owl was doing fine. Jukka saw the Owl taking a vole, eating it, after ten minutes taking an other vole and eating it too. Two days earlier this same bird (I checked from pictures) was not so lively. Today it was preying most of the day. When standing and waiting in the wind I though to give up and to go to warmer place, but when wading in deep snow I got warm again. Because I don’t have time to make any new picture (leaving to Estonia tomorrow morning) I will put older pictures of Tengmalm's Owl.

Some survive, some don’t

This was the last Tengmalm's Owl on Island of Seurasaari. After dropping down from the branch it was living only half an hour. It weight nothing. Three hours earlier it was flying away from Ural Owl which was just passing by.

Toiset selviävät -toiset eivät

Kuvan helmipöllö oli viimeinen Helsingin Seurasaaren helmipöllöistä. Vielä kolme tuntia ennen kuin se putosi väsähtäneenä oksalta, se väisti läheltä ohi lentävää viirupöllöä. Pertti Rasp ja hänen vaimonsa Vuokko Jernfors veivät pöllön Korkeasaaren eläintarhaan, mutta se kuoli matkalla. Helmipöllö oli enää pelkää luuta ja höyheniä. Osa viirupöllöistäkin on nälkiintynyt, ja ne ovat joutuneet kanahaukan saaliiksi, mutta ainakin yksi lintu saalistaa vielä menestyksellisesti myyriä.
